A friend mentioned this yesterday during a fellowship meeting – โthe lower lightsโ and oh what memories it brought to me.๐
Brightly beams, our father’s mercy
From his lighthouse evermore
But to us, he gives the keeping
Of the lights along the shore
Let the lower lights be burning
Send a gleam across the wave
Some poor fainting, struggling seaman
You may rescue, you may save.
What are the lower lights?
Primarily, they refer to guiding lights near the shore, to help ships navigate safely to the harbour especially in challenging conditions like darkness or narrow channels.
Metaphorically, lower lights refers to people who reflect the light of Christ in this dark world; individuals who allow the light of Christ to shine through them.
Jesus is the master light; the Light of the World. (John 8:12)
We: you and I, as followers of Christ are to be these lower lights, pointing others to Christ our Saviour. To keep our lamps burning, we must have an intimate fellowship with God daily. As we draw near to God, He draws near to us. (James 4:8)
Matthew 5:14-16 NIV – โYou are the light of the world. A town built on a hill cannot be hidden.
15 Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house.
16 In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.
May we keep our lamps burning for our Lord daily. His grace is sufficient.
I’ll end with the words of this Sunday School song – Read your Bible, pray everyday,…if you want to grow. Fellowship with other believers is also important. The imagery of coals burning together comes to mind. Removing a single burning coal would cause it to cool down and die out. May we not give up meeting together. (Hebrews 10:24,25)
May the good Lord bless and keep us all.
Amen.

Great piece. Beautiful reminder that as followers of Christ, we’re called to be ‘lower lights’ shining His love and mercy to those around us. ๐๐ฟโจ
Amen.
God bless you!
Thank you for reminding us of who we are. May the Lord help us to keep our lights burning ๐ฅ ๐๐ฝ ๐๐ป.
A big amen to that!
