JEHOVAH SHAMMAH

By Carol Clegg-Lamptey Last updated: October 28, 2023 4 Min Read

I was reading my diary the other day and this name popped up – Jehovah Shammah. I sincerely could’t remember what it meant; just that a sermon had been preached on it several years ago, which had obviously spoken to me.

Jehovah Shammah, which appears in Ezekiel 48:35 means “the Lord is there”

Ezekiel 48:35 -The distance all around will be 18,000 cubits. “And the name of the city from that time on will be: “the Lord is there.”

What is the background to this passage?

This passage in Ezekiel is the ending of the description of the Holy City that was revealed to Ezekiel in a vision from the Lord.

The City that Ezekiel describes represents the Kingdom of God, the New Jerusalem, and the people of the Lord. By calling God by the name Jehovah Shammah, Ezekiel describes God as being with his people, and the name means He will be found in this city, which is His people.

There are so many passages in the Bible which attest to the fact that God is with us; He Himself has promised to be with us.

God is certainly not a man to lie nor change His mind.(Num 23:19)

There was a day during the week, that I felt so alone. In such moments, you and I have two choices – we look up or we look down. We choose to remember that we have a God or choose to sink into a mood which can quickly go downhill. I’ve been down there and it is not a pleasant place to be. I chose to look up to my God who has promised never to leave nor forsake me.I flooded my status with songs to encourage myself in the Lord and that my friend is how some of us daily battle. We encourage ourselves with the lyrics of songs; with the Word of God and if God sends someone with a word for us, even better.

BUT GOD!!!!!!!

The following are some verses to remind us that we are never alone.

God dey paaaa; never forget it!!!!

Deuteronomy 31:6 NIV –
Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid or terrified because of them, for the LORD your God goes with you; he will never leave you nor forsake you.”

Joshua 1:9 NIV – Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the LORD your God will be with you wherever you go.”

Psalm 46:1-2 NIV –
God is our refuge and strength,
an ever-present help in trouble.
2 Therefore we will not fear, though the earth give way
and the mountains fall into the heart of the sea.

Psalm 46:7 NIV –
The LORD Almighty is with us;
the God of Jacob is our fortress.

Isaiah 43:2 NIV –
When you pass through the waters,
I will be with you;
and when you pass through the rivers,
they will not sweep over you.
When you walk through the fire,
you will not be burned;
