Thermostat or Thermometer?

By Carol Clegg-Lamptey Last updated: May 27, 2024 4 Min Read

I’m sure you’re wondering where this is coming from 😅.
God of course! 🤓

I used to be a thermometer. 🌡️
I strive to be a thermostat these days, by God’s good grace.
So what’s the difference??

Well, a thermometer as we all know, reads the temperature in a room. If it’s hot, it tells you it’s hot and vice versa.
A thermostat on the other hand regulates the temperature. It helps control the temperature in the room by making small adjustments to heat or cold.
It’s all a matter of what temperature you want to set.
Thermostats are much more effective than thermometers. 😃

How does this translate into our lives as followers of Christ? 🤔
Well for one, I believe we are called to be thermostats.

Matthew 5:13-16 NIV – “You are the salt of the earth. But if the salt loses its saltiness, how can it be made salty again?
It is no longer good for anything, except to be thrown out and trampled underfoot.

14 “You are the light of the world. A town built on a hill cannot be hidden.
15 Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house.

16 In the same way, let your light shine before
others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.

People must know that there is a Christ follower around them because of how you speak, how you react, what you say and what you do.
Do you simply conform or you seek to please God in all you do?
Remember Joseph? When tempted by Potiphar’s wife, he didn’t just stand there talking,..he fled! 😅

When our own Lord and Saviour was faced with the agony He was about to endure in the Garden of Gethsemane, what did He say? “Not my will, but yours be done, oh Lord..”
It was all about staying in the will of God and pleasing God. 😊🙏🏽

Thankfully, Jesus didn’t leave as us orphans – the Holy Spirit was sent to be our helper. Are you listening to and for Him?
Or you’ve allowed the noise of this world to drown out His voice?

We have a calling.
A charge to keep we have, a God to glorify, a never-dying soul to save and fit it for the sky.
We are ambassadors of Christ!
We are to raise high His banner.
We should be able to walk into a room and change the climate.
All this done not in our own strength; for the arm of flesh will fail us. God will strengthen us and enable us when we present ourselves to Him as willing servants.

So I put it to you 😅, are you 🫵🏽 a thermostat or a thermometer?

God bless you!
🤗
